Anthony Powers
Senior Reform Strategist
At the young age of 16, Anthony was convicted of murder and sentenced to 77 years in prison without the possibility of parole. With assistance from Seattle Clemency Project pro bono counsel, at 42 years old, Anthony was granted early release in 2019. Anthony is an exceptional individual known for his innovative ideas and ability to make connections to bring these ideas to fruition. While incarcerated, he founded a successful behavior health program called the Redemption Project and was a facilitator for Roots to Success, a program that worked to lower recidivism. Since his release, Anthony has been busy contributing to the community. Apart from the Mentoring Program, which was built out by SCP’s Mentoring Director Karlton Daniel, Anthony designed and led the Seattle Clemency Project Statewide Reentry Program. Anthony has traveled to multiple states, meeting with leaders of some of the most extensive reentry programs in the country. He has led presentations at the University of Washington School of Law and spoken at colleges and universities across the country and at national conferences. Anthony has fully embraced his own personal journey and transition back into the community and appreciates the support of his wife, friends, and family. In August 2023, Anthony was honored with a prestigious National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers Award and named the 2023 Champion of State Criminal Justice Reform.
